Last year’s Pirelli World Challenge races at Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca (MRLS) brought us a wide variety of cars and competitive classes racing together for an action-packed weekend. This was also the season finale event to determine the champions. So I was definitely looking forward to another opportunity to shoot photos at this exciting event, courtesy of MRLS and BayAreaAutoScene. Some say the days of gas-burning, internal combustion engines are numbered, and that in the not too distant future most, if not all, automobiles will be electric-powered. And that means, in due course that race cars will end up going down the same path. That’s too bad, because future generations may not get the opportunity to hear the pounding thunder of a V8 motor, or a V10 or V12 echoing through the valley and hills around a racetrack like MRLS.
We arrived to the sights and sounds of a long line of classic and muscle cars preparing to take a parade lap around the course during a break between race sessions. The Race ‘N Rod Nationals participants proudly displayed the cars in the paddock for visitors to admire.
They also started a new race category this year, called SprintX. It features a 1-hour long sprint race and requires 2 drivers, with one mandatory driver and tire change mid-way through the race. The format makes for an interesting competition with some pit strategy and close racing action throughout the hour.
