August Featured Car – NorCalGirl’s Scion FR-S

Sheena Dela Cruz is a tough lady to keep up with, and her Scion/Toyota FR-S is no different.  Other 86DRIVE members have attested to the brisk pace she maintains through the local mountain roads.  That’s right, folks, she’s a DRIVER.  Don’t let the purple-colored Brembo brakes or the neo-chrome lug nuts fool you, this is not merely a show car or garage queen.  Sheena enjoys taking her 6-speed manual transmission-equipped FR-S, nicknamed Crystal, out for drives on the weekends and hitting the twisties with the NorCal 86DRIVE club.  And then turns around and wins trophies at the car shows, like the Best Female Owned FRS award at this year’s Spring NorCal 86 Owners Meet.  She’s also a regular attendee at Moto Miwa’s Dynamic Driving Academy down in Southern California.  In her own words, she is an enthusiast for both ends of the spectrum — the racing world and the show world.  And so her car reflects that dual nature, as a sort of hybrid show but race-capable car.

It seems like almost every week new parts arrive to go on her car.  The same day after we met up with her to do a photo shoot, she lets us know that her new carbon fiber SEIBON hood has just arrived, and a few days later we feel compelled to meet up again to get even more shots of the car, now sporting the CF hood. (That explains why some of the photos attached have a white hood, and others have the CF hood.)  She explains to us, being auto enthusiasts runs in the family.  Her brother Darrell, who’s also busy building his own Supra project car, helps with the wrenching and provides guidance as to what mods might deliver the best bang-for-the-buck performance.  “He’s the best mechanic I know,” she says.  Their parents are also supportive and encourage them to travel around the state attending every car show and event they can manage to get to.  It truly is a family affair with this NorCalGirl.  “I was going to get the carbon fiber hood painted to match the car as soon as possible, but my mom said she likes the way it looks unpainted,” she tells me. Hey Sheena, are your parents open to adopting another son?  🙂

Rather than going on with more colorful prose about the car’s many facets, I’ll just let the mods list below speak for itself because otherwise I’d be typing all afternoon.  Enjoy the photos, taken by myself and by Jessie (MyRx) aka Mr. Tripod.  If you want to know more about Sheena’s build, she is active on both FT86CLUB and 86FEST forums and maintains her build thread there.  And she’ll be showing her car this weekend at 86FEST, so if you’re going to be there, be sure to stop by and check her Crystal out!  (I’ll be there too. 🙂 )We can’t wait to see what else she has planned for her car – we hear a supercharger is on the to-do list.
